She is my father

Hún pabbi or “She is my Father”  is a solo performance in which the actor Hannes Óli Ágústsson describes the relationship between him and his father.

Hannes Óli always thought he had a typical relationship with his dad, not very close or intimate, but quite practical. He felt his father was a serious man that just wasn’t that open.

When his dad came out in 2009 as a transwoman, Hannes had to adjust to a new normal. Perhaps this hadn’t been a normal relationship? How can someone keep a secret for that long? At 57 years old his father had to start over with her life, now as the woman she had been all along, Anna Margrét.

The piece deals with gender and the frame society puts around the two accepted genders, male and female. But for many it is not that simple. Hannes Óli goes on a journey through his life and looks back on the clues that were right in front of him the whole time. He uses reference points from his childhood — cinema mostly, to make sense of his reality.

What if someone had told his dad when she was a little girl that she should live as her true self? Would Hannes be standing on that stage today?

The performance is a an honest dialogue with the audience about a very unexpected life experience, which is something close to everyone can relate to having.
